Austria (Österreich, not Australia!) has an authentic cuisine with many dishes of its own, but it also combines elements of the German and Hungarian cuisines. Wiener schnitzel and Sachertorte are common on the menu of many international restaurants, but from the rich Austrian collection of recipes we have chosen a different Austrian meat dish and dessert.
Leberknödelsuppe (Liver Dumpling Soup)
We start with a clear beef bouillon with small balls of ground liver with bread and egg (photo).
Zwiebelrostbraten (Onion Steak) with Rösterdäpfel (Sautéed Potatoes) and Rotkraut (Braised Red Cabbage)
The main dish is an imported rib steak covered with fried onions and accompanied by slightly fried potatoes and braised red cabbage
Apfelstrudel (Apple Pastry) with Warm Vanilla Sauce
A traditional Austrian favourite completes tonight's dinner: apple pastry with vanilla sauce.
