Holland is usually not regarded as a heaven for gourmets. Wrong! First of all: the country is a culinary paradise where Dutch sailors and traders brought anything from anywhere, due to the Dutch history of exploring the seas and the continents. But true: not many fine restaurants in Holland will serve a wide range of local dishes. Best Dutch dinners are prepared at home, by mom (or dad, nowadays). 'Stamppot' is one of the favorites: a typical Dutch stew of mashed potatoes, vegetables and meat. Tonight the main dish will be one of those many 'stamppot' stews of course...

Say Holland, say cheese. So what is more logical than start your Dutch treat with a tasty vegetable soup with melted Gouda cheese?

One of the most common 'stamppot' dishes is called 'hutspot' (see photo - sometimes translated hodge-podge or hotchpotch), a stew of mashed potatoes, carrots and onions. It comes with a traditional firm Dutch meatball and gravy. Optional are cubes of fried bacon that we can mix with the hutspot, if you wish. A do-it-yourself variation is adding a few shoots of vinegar: you will find it on your table. Many Dutch like it this way - it gives the hutspot a fresh taste.

The dessert is not a pie, not a pudding, but something in between: fried apple pieces mixed with 'speculaas', a well-known Dutch cookie with a taste of cinnamon.
