theSawah is completely different: Phillip and Wim will host you in their own beautiful home and cook for you upon request. Make a plan, call or mail us and we try to live up our motto 'If it's possible we will do it'.
AT THE TOP IN YOGYA Thanks to 40 very positive TripAdvisor reviews we were the number 1 (sometimes 2) restaurant in Yogyakarta. For unknown reasons TripAdvisor now lists us in Bantul, not in Yogyakarta anymore. So we are the number 1 out of 1 restaurants in Bantul. But the quality is as before, when we were the number 1 out of 140 Yogyakarta restaurants!
BEST SELLING: OUR INDONESIAN MENU A million spots in Yogya serve Indonesian food but we dare say our elaborate Indonesian dinners are much better than most of them. Especially our rijsttafel (sampler with authentic Javanese ingredients) is renowned. A more simple version is also available for lunches.
THE CALENDAR Our menu calendar feature on the left needs an update: although you can only click on fri-sat-sun we are now open whenever guests book. So come up with a date and a menu wish and Phillip and Wim will pamper your taste buds and tongue. A romantic tropical place, a personal approach and an atmosphere of homy hospitality will complete your unusual dining experience at theSawah.
WORLD KITCHEN Although we serve all guests in your party the same set dinner, there is still a lot to choose from. Our permanently rotating list is 30 countries and menus long, from Hungary to Hawaii, from Mexico to Malaysia, from Israel to Indonesia. Click on our calendar and see which country and menu we selected for a specific date. But feel free to contact us for a different choice.
If you are a vegetarian: contact us in time, then we can discuss and prepare a delicious dinner for you.
WHERE? TheSawah is first of all: our own home sweet home. We happily live there since 2006, amidst the green rice and sugar cane fields just outside the romantic pottery village of Kasongan, 8 km south of the centre of Yogya. Our place has a tropical ambience, an elegant dining room, a spacious traditional joglo terrace and two other garden terraces.
N E W : ACCOMMODATION! We have plans for a nice elegant Home Hotel theSawah in our spacious garden, but could not find investors so far. But upon repeated request we recently started to host house guests in the only guest room we have. If you want a quiet comfortable place in the Java countryside, in a beautiful home, we will be pleased to accommodate you for rp 300.000 per night, including a very good breakfast. Minimum stay usually 3 nights, incidentally 2 nights. The room is not too big, but has a nice queen size bed, air conditioning, private bathroom with hot water attached. You will be a real house guest of Phillip and Wim, so you can use their living room as well. And have nice conversations if you wish. We have plans for a swimming pool, but in plans you can not swim ;-)

Want to celebrate your birthday or wedding anniversary here? Have a group of visitors from overseas or another city in Indonesia? Want a business lunch or a workshop for a day, including meals and drinks? We also cater for groups up to 40 people. Call us and tell us your wishes. Most likely we will be able to create a nice lunch or dinner event, specializing in authentic Javanese food. Can be table service (up to 25 people) or buffet style self-service (up to 40 people).
OPEN We are open anytime that we are open. That means: you need to make sure that we have time and space to serve you. So a booking is always needed - see below. Please give us enough time to buy fresh ingredients and prepare the food well - same day dinner bookings after 12 noon can usually not be accepted. Booking minimum one day ahead is appreciated. For lunches time can be shorter.

WATCH WHERE YOU GO! Unfortunately Yogyakarta has another restaurant with about the same name, far from ours: they are in the north, we in the south. They are good, we are better.
So if you come by car or taxi be sure you drive south to KASONGAN first - everyone knows that village. There pass through the village (see the printable map) to find our place.
